From the President

Greetings Members and Guests,

Welcome to the Pittsburgh Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated a membership organization of mothers with children ages two to nineteen. Jack and Jill of America was founded January 24, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from a meeting of 20 mothers under the leadership of Marion Stubbs Thomas with the idea of bringing children together in a social and cultural environment. From the beginning, Jack and Jill of America focused on instilling the values and leadership skills that would serve each child well into adulthood. The Pittsburgh Chapter, founded in 1944, is the 4th oldest chapter and continues to lead the regional charge to develop children, particularly in the African American community.

As your President, I look forward to creating and participating in edifying educational, cultural, civic, health, leadership, recreational, and social opportunities for our children while simultaneously teaching them the importance of selfless service. We will, as a chapter, participate in activities that encourage and support youth of the greater Pittsburgh community because, as the old African proverb says, “It takes a village to raise a child.”

I am excited and enthusiastic about this 2011-2012 program year! We kicked off the year with a unique and innovative Jack and Jill Day event encompassing all of the Achieving Excellence, Inspiring Greatness, Motivating Youth to Lead and Serve (AIM) initiatives.  We kayaked, biked, and even found lost treasures using the latest GPS technology while nourishing our bodies with healthy food choices. In addition to social and community service events aimed at our members, we will also hold workshops on financial literacy and entrepreneurship for middle school students in the Pittsburgh public schools.

In conclusion, I anticipate a fun filled program year which embraces the (AIM) initiatives, thus focusing on healthy living, leadership development and financial literacy for our families.  We must always be diligent to keep our founders original aims:

  •   To aid mothers in learning more about their children by careful study.
  • To seek for all children the same advantages which we desire for our own.
  • To support all national legislation aimed at bettering the conditions of all children.
